Abreu going out west… Orlando Cabrera too?

One big name is now off the free angent list. Bobby Abreu has signed a one
BobbyAbreuAngels.jpgyear contract with the Angels. I think this is a good move for the Angels. They already have big bad Vlad and to add a good bat like Abreu can only help your offense. They did need to fill some gap that was left by Mark Teixeira depature to the Yanks. Now lets see what move the A’s will come back with now. The A’s are still working on a deal to try to sign Orlando Cabrera. If he doesn’t want to be teamless this close to Spring Training. I’m sure they will work something out within the next few days. The AL West should be a good battle with the A’s upgrading their offense and the Angels still having their solid team. They did lose Teixeira but got a decent bat by adding Abreu.

I am surprised that Bobby Abreu took about $ 5 million, but Pat Burrell might have brought the market to a screeching halt after signing for what he did with my Rays.

That is fine, Abreu will be an average player in that lineup, which might have a fight on their hands in that division in 2009. As for Cabrera, I am not a fan of him. I always thought the White Sox and the Red Sox could have done a lot better without him the last few years. I think Jenn, our White Sox gal might have the right idea about him.

I think Abreu will do pretty well for the Angels since they lost Teixeira’s bat. But don’t the Angels have a surplus of outfielders? As for Cabrera, most teams he’s been on haven’t really needed him, I think. He wasn’t a great lead-off hitter for us, his OBP was relatively “meh.” I don’t know the A’s shortstop situation, but if they’ve got someone in their system, then go with that. If you’re gonna sign a free agent who can play short, they’d be better off with Nomar. Then again, I might be biased against Cabrera.

I do think the Angels have a lot of outfielders but they have a good players which is the good thing. They want to win it all and if someone goes down then they won’t have to worry about it. I’m sure these guys will be trading off as a DH. As for Cabrera. I don’t think he’s that great of a pick up, but the A’s aren’t sure how Bobby Crosby will be. He’s always hurt, but he has been hitting with HOlliday and McGwire, so his bat should be decent if he stays healthy. Maybe one of them will end up at 3rd if Chavez goes down again with another injury.

Impressive haul for the Angels to grab a model of consistency like Abreu. He is going to have a heck of a season in LA. By the way, did you hear at all the rumors of a possible Hudson/Manny splash coming the dodgers way in the next day or so? Just wondering.

I am VERY HAPPY that The Angels took advantage of the fire sale of free agents and picked up Abreu. It takes a little of the sting out of losing Texiera. With the DH, we can definitely find room for his bat. He’s a bargain and I love that we only committed for a year. Have you heard the rumor that Abreu signed quickly because he’s afraid that his value may drop if he’s identified as one of the other Roids Boys along with A-Rod?

I realize this is ancient history but Orlando Cabrera’s stats were good in 2004 with the Red Sox. He had difficult job of coming in to fill Nomar’s shoes. He got some clutch hits for us in the second half of 2004. I guess when I think of OC, I just remember the 2004 version…
