Thoughts on Giants Royals Cactus League Game 2/27

Randy Johnson made his Giants debut against the Royals. Johnson had a very good start going three up and three down and getting one strike out. The Giants open up the bottom of the first also going three up and three down. Velez, Renteria and Aurillia hit three ground balls to end the first inning. Johnson started the 2nd inning by hitting first baseman Shealy and then giving up a single to Olivo. Johnson then threw a wild pitch allowing Shealy and Olivo to move up to 3rd and 2nd base with no outs. He then struck out the next batter Smith. Maier then grounded out to score the run from 3rd. Olivo then tried to steal home on the pitch and he was thrown out at the plate by Randy Johnson. Johnson pitched 2 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit with 2 strike outs.

The Giants offense still had no luck in the bottom of the 2nd. They went three up and three down again. Molina, Bowker and Phelps couldn’t get anything started. Royals starting pitcher Greinke had a very nice start. Going 2 innings facing 6 Giants and giving up 0 runs on 0 hits and getting one strike out.

Jonathan Sanchez started the 3rd inning making his spring debut. Sanchez got the first guy but then gave up a hit to Lubanski. Aviles got a gift RBI on a fly ball hit to left field. Velez lost it in the sun, so the ball dropped for a single. Give the Royals a 2 run lead. Sanchez is going to play in the WBC for Puerto Rico and is projected to the be the 3rd starting pitcher.

Burriss was the first Giant to get a hit. He got a single in his first AB. Burriss quickly got himself off the base paths by getting thrown out trying to steal 2nd base. After 3 innings the Royals are leading 2-0 over the Giants. Sanchez did come out for the top of the 4th inning. Sanchez did get the Royals in order and also getting a strike out. Sanchez pitched 3 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 run and 4 strike outs. The run he did give up should have been caught by Velez but he lost it in the sun.

Ortiz then pitched the 6th inning. Giving up a 3 run home run to Shealy. He gave up 2 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 1 strike out and gave up 1 home run in 1 inning of work.

Giants closer Brian Wilson came in to pitch the 7th inning. He gave up 1 hit and 0 runs. Just what Giants fans expected to see when Wilson takes the mound. Jack Taschner worked the 8th inning. He gave up back to back walks. Also allowing a 1 run, and getting 1 strike out.

Kevin Frandsen hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th inning to get the Giants on the scoreboard. After 8 innings the Royals are up 6-1. Billy Saddler gets the 9th inning and gets himself in trouble but gets a double play ball to get the Giants out of the inning. The Giants didn’t score any in the 9th inning. The final score is Royals 6 and Giants 1. Royals got 6 runs on 8 hits and 0 errors. The Giants got 1 run on 5 hits and 1 error.

Nothing really exciting from the Giants offense. Bengie Molina got a double and Frandsen hit a home run to get the Giants only run. No Giants players had multiple hits. Randy Johnson, Jonathan Sanchez and Brian Wilson looked really good.

Giants spring records drops to 1-2. Barry Zito will start tomorrow against the M’s.

If Zito is starting, I guess that means the Giants fall to 1-3, huh? 😉 I am anxious to see what Randy Johnson can do. I am pulling for Matt Cain to have a great year. If he does, that Giants pitching staff looks invincible. Pony up $45 to $50 million for Man-Ram, and it would be a great summer in the Bay Area!
