1933 – Babe Ruth takes a $23,000 pay cut which is indicative of the depression era.
~ King of Cali
In 1933, it was the height of the Depression with unemployment running at 25%! Imagine what that $23,000 would have bought.

Yeah, I’d like to see today’s players take a small paycut so I can afford the hotdogs at the game.

Steven,
Nice re-cap, and I am glad that the Marlins will continue to have a home here in South Florida. I have to have SOME form of baseball around me! I think it is very interesting that Babe Ruth willingly took a pretty substantial pay cut (for what money was worth in those days). If only players right now could see how money isn’t everything.

Glad the Marlins will get their stadium! And I am with Jeff – these players should all take a pay cut. Even if they did though, you know Bud Selig would just tack the extra money onto his own salary!

It’d be nice to see some of today’s players willing to take pay cuts from their ridiculous salaries to help out their country…
Oh well, that’s America for ya…

Hey man, you travel to see the Giants by any chance?

$23,000 was an enormous amount of money back then. Can you imagine any ballplayer taking the equivalent percentage of a pay cut today, without throwing a hissy fit and lodging a complaint with the players union? Neither can I.
