Last Homestand before the All Start Break

The Giants were able to take 2 out of 3 from the Astros. Giants were laying the “Smacketh Down” on the Astros in the firs two games. Then in game 3 they sent Randy Johnson to the mound. I know I was expecting a sweep with the way they were hitting and Johnson pitching. Well it didn’t happen like that. Giants end up losing and Johnson hurt his throwing shoulder and were still waiting a MRI to see how serious the injury is.

The next 3 games are against the Florida Marlins. I’m expecting the Giants to take 2 out of 3 from the Marlins. Matt Cain starts tonight’s game. Then Zito tomorrow and Sadowski on Wed. Once that series is over the Giants have the Padres coming to town for a 4 game series. The Giants should at least split that series, but I would have for a series win against the Padres. They should close out the first 1/2 of the season on a high note.

Congrats to Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain for making the All Star team. Don’t forget to go to MLB.com and vote for Pablo Sandoval to make the All Star Team!

Just some quick thoughts from 2 Spring Training Games…

Yankees – Astros

Russ Ortiz pitched 3 solid innings today for the Astros. He’s trying to win the 5 spot in the rotation for the Astros. He did have one bad pitch. That turned out to be a home run for Angel Berroa. I was listening to the game online and I heard a name that sounded so familiar. It was Cody Ransom. He was a Giant a while back. He never really made it big, but I was glad to hear he’s still playing. I don’t think he will make the Yankees opening day roster but he did play 33 games for them last season hitting .302.

Mike Hampton got lit up today. He gave up 4 runs on 6 hits in 2 innings. He did manage to get 2 strike outs.

Giants – Royals

I love listening to baseball on the radio and I must say Giants fans are really lucky to have the guys we have on the radio. Today KNBR the Giants flagship station is not doing the game. I had to listen to the game with the Royals radio guys. All I can say is I feel sorry for Royals fans that have to listen to the games on the radio. These guys were just so blah. I mean I don’t want to say they were bad, but they were just so boring compared to Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper, Mike Krukow and Dave Flemming. They did make me laugh one time. One of the guys told the other one that he’s already in mid season mode (the way he was calling the game). Then the other guy says why cause of all the (Royals) errors. It just made me laugh out loud.

The Giants didn’t play that great today.  Matt Cain gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in 1.2 innings. I didn’t really get much better for any other Giants pitchers except the Giants closer Brian Wilson. He 1 inning allowing 0 runs. The Giants had 8 different pitchers in this game. Dave Roberts had an 0-3 day and still hasn’t managed to get a batting average yet this spring training. Burriss went 2-3 to to help his battle for the 2nd base job. The only other Giants player with 2 hits was Torres. The final score of the game is Royals 14 and the Giants 5.

The other Bay Area team.

The Oakland A’s have signed Orlando Cabrera to a one year deal. They signed him for $5 million less than what he was asking for this off-season. Orlando signed for $4 million. This means Bobby Crosby will no longer be the starting short stop. He will play a utility role or be traded. I was actually excited to see how Crosby would do this season. I’m sure he will have a fine season in whatever role he is playing this year. I guess this signing means Nomar might be retiring. He said last week it was the A’s or retirement.

Today in Baseball History

1927 – Babe Ruth becomes the highest paid player in major league history when the Yankees announce the Bambino will earn $70,000 per season for the next three years.

Dodgers are close to signing…….. Wolf not Manny!

The Dodgers are close to signing Randy Wolf. The Dodgers really need to add a
RandyWolf.jpgstarter or two. They have lost Brad Penny and Derek Lowe. Even though this isn’t a Manny signing. I’m sure they are really happy to at least have one starter spot almost filled. Maybe Wolf will say hold up. I’m not signing here unless Manny signs. =) That’s what us Giants fans would love. Once this deal is confirmed. I will say it’s a good move for the Dodgers. He’s not an ace but a good pitcher to have on your team.

Just had to update the blog to say it’s now a done deal! Wolf is a Dodger again.

Manny and the Dodgers are playing chicken

It seems like it’s a game of chicken with the Dodgers and Manny Ramirez. The Dodgers yesterday made an offer to Manny for 1 year $25
99MannyDodgers.jpgmillion. Manny rejected the offer very fast. Seems like his mind is set to get the contract he wants or hold out. Right now I don’t think Manny cares where he goes. He just wants the money and years. If any teams are ready to step up then come on down and pick up your Manny Ramirez. The Giants now have their chance to make a two year offer to Manny to try to steal him from the Dodgers.

“We still want to sign Manny,” Colletti said earlier Monday. “We still want to make him a Dodger. That hasn’t changed.”

The Dodgers chairman Frank McCourt the Dodgers still want Manny back but did say “at some point, we have to move on”. If the Dodgers don’t get Manny a lot of people believe that they will end up with Adam Dunn. Dunn did already get a contract offer from the Nationals. He hasn’t rejected that offer and it has been on the table for a while. Seems like Adam would rather sign somewhere else. Maybe the Dodgers?

If anyone wanted there team to sign Ty Wigginton. I hope you’re an Orioles fan, cause they signed him to a 2 year contract.

What’s the Giants next move?

I keep reading and hearing about the Giants and possibilities. Seems like the
JoeCrede.jpgGiants are rumored with any and every free agent. The Giants needed so much so pretty much any player addition was a good fit for the Giants. Early on in the “Hot Stove” the Giants were linked to have interest in Rafael Furcal who would have been a great addition at shortstop. They ended up with Edgar Renteria. I don’t think that’s a bad move. Saves some money and Edgar is still an upgrade at shortstop. I think the move is fine if the Giants get another good player. If no other moves are made. Then I don’t see a point. Just let the young guys play. I just think this NL West division is so weak this year. That it’s there for the Giants to just take it. The starting rotation is really solid and the bullpen has been improved with the addition of Jeremy Affeldt and Bob Howry.

Giants fan have also heard the Giants name with free agents such as Orlando Hudson, Adam Dunn, Pat Burrell, Manny Ramirez, Ty Wigginton, Joe Crede, C.C. Sabathia and now Bobby Abreu. I’m sure I left a few other names out.

We all know where CC ended up at. He’s went with the money and signed with the Yankees. You can’t blame a guy for wanting to get paid. Giants fans just hoped CC we take a hometown discount to play for the Giants. It was like a fantasy for Giants fans. It just wouldn’t have made much sense to pay him a huge salary and not get a bat with that money. Well we didn’t get him but where’s the big bat?

MannyRamirezredsox.jpgWe no longer would need Orlando Hudson if we have 3 players who are trying to fight for our 2nd base position. To me it was either Hudson or a shortstop and we already got the shortstop. Pat Burrell who is from the Bay Area didn’t seem like a good fit to me either. He’s just not the big bat I think the Giants should add. It’s known they want a first or third baseman. Ty Wigginton and Joe Crede seem like they would be okay, but they are not the big bat that the Giants need. Adam Dunn sounds okay to me even though he’s not great on “D” and strikes out a lot. I’m just trying to get any bat in a Giants uniform. I would have never said I want Dunn before today. I did also see the Giants were interested in Bobby Abreu and a cheaper alternative to Manny Ramirez. I just can’t see the Giants bringing him. He’s a good player but he’s on the decline with his power numbers.

If anyone from the Giants front office ever reads this blog. Please let us Giants fans know if you want to win or just put an okay team out there to get your $$$ rolling in. Giants fans have been waiting a long time to win it all. I’m not saying this is the team to do it, but if we had a bat like Manny’s then we would have a great shot at winning the NL West. Then once you get in the playoffs it’s a crap shoot. Well I like our chances in a crap shoot with the starting rotation we would take into a playoff series.

If you were a GM what realistic moves would you make for your team this off-season?

Its funny cause I wrote this topic down and was going to post a blog about it.
Thumbnail image for TimLincecum-1.jpgThen I actually found another blog with something similar. It was about the Giants and what they would do if they were the GM. I do give the guy credit because he did put a lot of time and thought into it, but it just wasn’t realistic. What realistic moves would you make with your team. Trades, free agent signings or whatever you can think of. You can’t change any of the teams your team has already made this off-season. Starting today….

If I was Brian Sabean I would trade some pitching for a bat. I would trade Jonathan Sanchez to the Florida Marlins for Jorge Cantu. He hit .277 with 29 home runs and 95 RBI’s. That would be the corner infielder they were looking for. He can play 3rd base and then Pablo Sandoval can play first base.

Then I would make a hard push for Manny Ramirez. He would be another great bat that would be in the middle of the lineup. Then the Giants would be the favorite in the NL West. They would have a very decent lineup with a great starting rotation.

If by any chance the Giants are out of it by trading deadline. Then I would trade Bengie Molina since he’s in his last year of his contact. No need to re-sign him with Buster Posey ready to come up by the end of the season. Posey was drafted by the Giants with the 5th overall pick in the 2008 draft. Randy Winn would like to stay a Giant. He’s been a good Giant too. I would re-sign him if he doesn’t demand a lot of money. If he’s not signed before the trading deadline. I would also trade him as well. To get some minor league player or players. No sense in letting him walk at the end of the season and get nothing in return.

What player on your favorite team will have a breakout year in 2009?

Well I think a couple players on the Giants will have a breakout year. I guess I will
PabloSandoval.jpgname them both and for different reasons. I think Pablo Sandoval will have a very nice season with the bat. He hit .345, 3 Home Runs and 24 RBI’s in just 41 games. I believe that was just a sample of what he can do with a bat in his hands. He does hit for AVG, but I’m hoping he gets a little more pop in his bat. He will probably be batting 3rd and I’m sure he will keep his AVG up and RBI’s will also come easy for him with Renteria on base a lot in front of him.

BarryZito.jpgI also think Barry Zito will have a breakout year. I know I’m sure a lot of you guys think that’s a type error. No it’s not! I do believe he will have a breakout year. This year he’s not going to be the main guy that everyone is looking at cause of his big contract. They have Tim Lincecum coming back as the ace and Cy Young award winner. Then you add Randy Johnson with Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez. Zito will fall back to like the 3rd or 4th spot in the starting rotation. Which can only help him. He will not be going up against another teams ace. He can only get better at the bottom of the rotation.

Who do you belive will be your teams breakout player of 2009?
