Random Thoughts 9/23

This is a short little blog. Just some random thoughts. It’s time to keep it real Giants fans. We are currently 5 games out with 11 games to go and our chances are slim to none. I believe the Giants went above and beyond what anyone expected this year. No I’m not throwing up the white flag, but just trying to keep it real. We were a big bat away from winning a lot of game this year. We knew coming into the season offense was going to be our problem and our pitching staff was going to be keeping us in games. Our pitching brought us this far and now Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez are tired and not able to keep up the strong pitching.

I say we start the Posey era tonight. Let’s see what he can do for the rest of the season. Molina looks so tired out there. Let’s get Bumgarner a start too before this season ends. Let’s see what we have, so we can get a little excited for next season.

Giants 1st 1/2 – Surprised!?!?!

With the first half of the season over. No one including myself expected the Giants to have a record like they have. We knew they would have a chance to win games cause they had a good starting staff on paper. Well they starters came out and pitched just as well as advertised!

I did expect Lincecum to go out and pitch like he did last year. He’s been
Thumbnail image for TimLincecum-1.jpgdoing that and has been on fire as of late. He’s even starting the All Star Game for the National League. Everyone kept saying Randy Johnson would just try for 5 wins and then shut down. Randy Johnson is an intense pitcher when he’s on the mound. There is no way this guy doesn’t try to go out there and go balls out every time he takes the mound. I did expect Matt Cain to have a good year, but 10 wins by the All Star break. Wow – that’s above and beyond what anyone could have asked for by this point of the season. We have two guys (Lincecum & Cain) that can be in it for the Cy Young Award. Zito has shown some good games and some bad games, but still better than last year. Sanchez was finally going to show up what he has this year and then ended up losing his starting spot in the rotation. Then he came back to the rotation because of a Randy Johnson injury. Sanchez then tosses a “No-Hitter”!

The Giants have the 2nd best home record in the National League. I know nobody seen that coming with this young unproven team. The NL West was said to be the weakest division in the NL this year. I guess all the experts were way wrong, cause the Giants have the Wild Card lead right now too. With that said the Giants still have a lot of upgrades they can do to help their batting order. They have been linked to a few different trade rumors. I know some fans think they should stay as is and roll the dice with these kids. I would make a deal if there is one to be made without giving up the farm. If they can’t get a big bat. I would at least make a trade to bring in a decent bat. Just someone to help spark the lineup. Many names have been linked – Uggla, Holliday, F-Sanchez, Dunn, Johnson, Dye, V-Mart and others. I wouldn’t make any trades that would include Bumgarner or Posey, but we do have guys in the minors that we can trade that have some value.

It would nice to see a big bat behind Pablo Sandoval. This guy can flat out hit. He’s hitting .333 with 15 home runs at the All Star Break. Sandoval is a guy that I try to see every AB. The last Giants player I needed to see every AB was Barry Bonds. Pablo is turning into a fan favorite very quickly. Giants fans should be proud of him since he came up through our system and is only 22 years old. We still have a lot more Sandoval ahead of us.

Even though the Giants are playing good ball right now. The are 10 games over .500 and still 7 games back of the Dodgers. They still have a long road ahead of them. If they can stay focused on trying to catch the Dodgers that might help them stay at top of the Wild Card Race. It’s very doubtful that they will catch the Dodgers but anything can happen with half of a season still left.

Giants, Dodgers and Bonds… Oh My!

Last night was a very cold and windy. You can see players between pitches blowing into their hands trying to warm them up. It reminded me of Candlestick Park. Watching games there with the wind blowing like crazy. =)

Another great start last night for the Giants starting rotation. Zito had 6 scoreless innings till the Dodgers got to him in the 7th inning. Zito and Sandoval have some kind of connection, cause Zito looks very comfortable with Sandoval behind the plate. Giants did have a 3-0 lead till the Dodgers got 4 in the 7th inning. Merkin Valdez came in with a runner on 1st and the Giants clinging to a 1 run lead. After the inning it was the Dodgers 4 and the Giants 3. The Giants did score 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take the lead right back. Brian Wilson then came in to strike out the side. He must had felt like he had to make a statement. Wilson also has deleted his Twitter Account. The media was on him for twittering late Saturday night about going out and then he got a blow save the next day. Dumb media! lol Wilson had just added me to follow me on twitter and not I have no chance at trying to interview him. =(

Giants are looking good right now. Once they lost the lead. I figured they were done. It was a very cold night, so it was easy for them to just throw in the towels and wait to try it again another day. These guys are starting to score a few runs. They send Sanchez to the mound tonight. He’s the one who started this impressive run by the starting rotation, so I’m hoping he can keep it going.

Barry Bonds made his way to AT&T Park last night. He was all smiles out there last night. It’s obvious he misses being out there and hearing all the fans chant his name. Bonds did say he was hoping the Giants would have got Manny Ramirez. He was saying how great of a hitter he is. He also was saying that the Giants have something good with Fred Lewis in left field. He has been watching all of the Giants games on TV. Said he’s seen Johnson 6 innings of no hit ball. He thinks this team has a great rotation and they are a good team with some good players. Bonds was like a different person last night and I’m glad people who were watching the game got to see that side of him. He was really nice, fun and joking around. You can tell his passion is still baseball. Just listening to him talk about hitting and breaking down Manny Ramirez’s hitting when he was at the plate. He needs to stay in the game some how, cause he has so much to offer to players. Bonds still said he’s not retired but he’s just a fan right now. He’s a big fan of the organization and he will always be a Giant.

Giants Win A Series With No Bats!

From the outside looking in it sounds like the Giants had a good weekend. They won the series over the D-Backs. Giants won 2 out of 3 games. Sounds good right? Well not exactly. I mean don’t get me wrong. I will take the wins. It’s just the Giants still aren’t scoring any runs.

Friday Night

The Giants sent Jonathan Sanchez to the mound and he pitched great! The Giants won that game 2-0. Not much offense but they got enough to get the win to start the series.

Saturday

The Giants send Tim Lincecum to the mound. He’s had a tough start to the early season. Well he goes out there and pitches a gem! He gives up 5 hits and gets 13 strike outs without allowing a run in 8 innings. Then relief pitching comes in and gives up 2 runs. Giants lose the game 2-0. No run support for Lincecum.

Sunday

Randy Johnson goes to the mound for the first time against his former team in a game that counts. Johnson goes into the 7th inning with a no hitter. He did give up a double in the 7th but still held the D-Backs scoreless. That was the only hit the D-Backs got in that game. The Giants had a 1 -0 lead for most of that game. Once Johnson came out it seemed like I was just waiting to see who would blow the game. Well the Giants then in the bottom of the 8th got bases loaded with no outs. All they can get out of that is one run. Aurilia hits a double play ball to score a run and then the next guy gets out. These guys just struggle to get 1 run. Well anyways they still pulled that game out. They won 2 out of 3 from the D-Backs with only scoring 4 runs.

The only good thing is the starting pitchers are doing what we all thought they would do and the bats are doing what everyone thought too. lol I’m sure the bats will wake up. There is a couple decent hitters that have started off with a slump. Up next for the Giants is Peavy and the Padres starting tomorrow night.

First Road Trip Finally Comes To An End!

The Giants finished up their first road trip of the year by going 0-6 against the Padres and Dodgers. Now I know the team is way better than the way they are playing. I see a lot of guys pressing. They are playing very poor defense. Guys are not doing a good job running the bases. Giants have had tons of chances to have crooked innings but still find a way to choke. I can remember one time when they had bases loaded with no outs. Next guy pops up to the infield then a double play ball. No runs scored. That’s just the kind of ball the Giants are playing right now.

Giants are back home today to face the D-Backs. I’m hoping some home cooking will be just what the doctor ordered. Giants send Sanchez, Lincecum and Johnson to the mound this weekend. I’m sure these guys are going to turn it around. It’s to early to panic, so I’m still trying to stay positive. =)

Jonathan Sanchez back with the Giants

Jonathan Sanchez is back with the Giants after his Puerto Rico team was not
sanchezWBC.jpgable to survive the second round. He thought he was going to throw a little more than what he did for team Puerto Rico. He did pitch in 6 2/3 innings for team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Once Sanchez made it back to the Giants training camp. He immediately threw a bullpen session on Thursday for the Giants and he will start for the Giants on Sunday against the Brewers. The 26 year old Sanchez has a live arm and I’m sure he will do a great job for the Giants in the 5th spot of the rotation. Giants were considering trading Sanchez for a bat this off-season, but no moves were made.
