Ken Rosenthal has reported that Rich Aurilia has decided to accept the Giants minor
179 league contract of the Phillies and Cubs. It’s reported that the deal should be finalized today. Aurilia has played 10 of his 13 seasons with the Giants. He can play all infield spots. He would be a good fill in person at 1st and 3rd base. Welcome back Richie!
Aurilia was quoted as saying “I’m happy I’m a Giant and hopefully I can finish my career with the Giants,” Aurilia said. “I have a lot of pride in putting on that uniform.”

Alex Rodriguez is the only name to be released from the ’03 steroid testing. He is on a list of
104 players to have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. A-Rod was approached by an SI reporter on Thursday. A-Rod did not want to discuss the test results. He would not say if he tested positive or not for performance enhancing drugs. A-Rod said “You’ll have to talk to the union.” He was asked if there was an expanation for his positive test, and he said “I’m not saying anything.” There were no penalties for positive tests in 2003. I’m sure we will get a lot more information on this in the next couple of days. I will try to keep you updated with information as I get it.
Gordon signs a 1 year contract with the D-Backs
Tom Gordon has signed a 1 year contract with the Arizona. It’s reported that he will earn $500,000 and with bonuses can earn him up to $2.5 million. Gordon hasn’t pitched in a game since July 5th of last season with the Phillies.
Andruw Jones hopes to resurrect his career with the Rangers
SI.com has confirmed that Andruw Jones has signed a 1 year minor league contract with the Rangers. Jones was released by the Dodgers this offseason. He worked out a deal so the Dodgers will release him and still pay him his contract over time. The Rangers signed him for $500,000 plus $1 million in incentives. I really like Jones and hope he has a bounce back year. He’s to young to be on that big of a decline.
Ryan Howard signs a 3 year contract with the Phillies
Well now the Phillies and Ryan Howard can stop all the arbitration stuff. I think this is a great move for the Phillies. They have a legit power hitter locked up with a contract he’s going to be happy with. If he can cut down a lot of his strike out’s, he’s going to be an even better player. He will earn $15 million this season, $19 million next year and $20 million in 2011.
Giants have an offer on the table for Crede and Aurilia
It’s been reported that CBS television on Saturday that the Giants have made an offer to Joe Crede. No specifics on the contract offer have been reported. Crede isn’t that big bat that the Giants need but he’s a good 3rd baseman and has a little pop. It’s just a question if he can stay healthy or not. Maybe that’s what the Giants signed Juan Uribe to back him up like he did last year for the White Sox. The only other team that has been talking about trying to sign Crede has been the Twins.
The Giants have also made an offer to Rich Aurilia for a minor league contract. Aurilia has spent 10 of his 13 big league seasons with the Giants. Brian Sabea said “I think he’s taking the weekend to decide. We hope he comes back.”
I did go to the Giants Fan Fest this weekend and will be blogging about it this week. I also will have pictures of the event in the Fan Fest blog.

The Dodgers are close to signing Randy Wolf. The Dodgers really need to add a
starter or two. They have lost Brad Penny and Derek Lowe. Even though this isn’t a Manny signing. I’m sure they are really happy to at least have one starter spot almost filled. Maybe Wolf will say hold up. I’m not signing here unless Manny signs. =) That’s what us Giants fans would love. Once this deal is confirmed. I will say it’s a good move for the Dodgers. He’s not an ace but a good pitcher to have on your team.
Just had to update the blog to say it’s now a done deal! Wolf is a Dodger again.

Giants are rumored with any and every free agent. The Giants needed so much so pretty much any player addition was a good fit for the Giants. Early on in the “Hot Stove” the Giants were linked to have interest in Rafael Furcal who would have been a great addition at shortstop. They ended up with Edgar Renteria. I don’t think that’s a bad move. Saves some money and Edgar is still an upgrade at shortstop. I think the move is fine if the Giants get another good player. If no other moves are made. Then I don’t see a point. Just let the young guys play. I just think this NL West division is so weak this year. That it’s there for the Giants to just take it. The starting rotation is really solid and the bullpen has been improved with the addition of Jeremy Affeldt and Bob Howry.
We no longer would need Orlando Hudson if we have 3 players who are trying to fight for our 2nd base position. To me it was either Hudson or a shortstop and we already got the shortstop. Pat Burrell who is from the Bay Area didn’t seem like a good fit to me either. He’s just not the big bat I think the Giants should add. It’s known they want a first or third baseman. Ty Wigginton and Joe Crede seem like they would be okay, but they are not the big bat that the Giants need. Adam Dunn sounds okay to me even though he’s not great on “D” and strikes out a lot. I’m just trying to get any bat in a Giants uniform. I would have never said I want Dunn before today. I did also see the Giants were interested in Bobby Abreu and a cheaper alternative to Manny Ramirez. I just can’t see the Giants bringing him. He’s a good player but he’s on the decline with his power numbers.
The Phillies Ryan Howard is ask for 18 million in arbitration. He’s asking for 8 million more
than what he got from arbitration last year. I’m actually shocked that the Phillies haven’t locked him up with a long contract by now. I belive arbitration does nothing but create bad feelings between the team and player. The players go in there talking about all the good things they do and their stats. Then the team goes in there basicly putting the player down and pointing out all the bad things they do. Just to win the arbitration. Just sounds like a lose situation on both parts. How can you want to play for a team that is trying to point out all the bad stuff you do.
In Howard’s situation the team will be talking about how many times this guy strikes out. If Howard doesn’t sign a long term contract with the Phillies he will have to go through arbitration again. He is not eligable for free agency until after the 2011 season.

Then I actually found another blog with something similar. It was about the Giants and what they would do if they were the GM. I do give the guy credit because he did put a lot of time and thought into it, but it just wasn’t realistic. What realistic moves would you make with your team. Trades, free agent signings or whatever you can think of. You can’t change any of the teams your team has already made this off-season. Starting today….
name them both and for different reasons. I think Pablo Sandoval will have a very nice season with the bat. He hit .345, 3 Home Runs and 24 RBI’s in just 41 games. I believe that was just a sample of what he can do with a bat in his hands. He does hit for AVG, but I’m hoping he gets a little more pop in his bat. He will probably be batting 3rd and I’m sure he will keep his AVG up and RBI’s will also come easy for him with Renteria on base a lot in front of him.
I also think Barry Zito will have a breakout year. I know I’m sure a lot of you guys think that’s a type error. No it’s not! I do believe he will have a breakout year. This year he’s not going to be the main guy that everyone is looking at cause of his big contract. They have Tim Lincecum coming back as the ace and Cy Young award winner. Then you add Randy Johnson with Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez. Zito will fall back to like the 3rd or 4th spot in the starting rotation. Which can only help him. He will not be going up against another teams ace. He can only get better at the bottom of the rotation.
