Giants edge out the Brew Crew

The Giants faced the Brew Crew today. Edgar Renteria got his first 2 RBI’s by hitting a 2 run double. In the 6th inning Juan Uribe hit a home run to give the Giants a 3-2 lead. Bowker then followed up with a home run to go back to back to give the Giants a 4-2 lead. The Giants would blow the lead and enter the bottom of the ninth down 6-5.

Ryan Rohlinger hit a 3 run home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to get the Giants the 8-6 win over the Brewers. The Giants who need a guy with pop have hit a home run in every single Cactus League game so far. They have 23 home runs and Ryan Rohlinger leads them with 3 home runs. Rohlinger isn’t expected to make the team at the start of the season.

Barry Zito did get the start for the Giants and he gave up 2 runs in 4 innings.  Howry did pitch 2 innings giving up 0 runs and his spring ERA this so far is 0.00. The only player with multiple hits for the Giants was Velez who went 2-3 pushing his AVG up to .276.

Quick thoughts on Manny signing

It’s finally over. Manny is going to be a Dodger. I’m sure most of us already knew that’s where he would end up. The Dodgers couldn’t afford to lose Manny. Manny did sign a 2 year contract but can opt out of it and become a
MannysignsLA.jpgfree agent after 1 year. This does make the Dodgers the favorite to win the NL West, but I wouldn’t say it’s going to be easy for them. They still don’t have the starting rotation that is going to blow teams away. They do need to score some runs to win some games, but they do have some good bats in their lineup.

I honestly think the Giants never wanted to sign Manny. Yeah if he fell on their lap they would have done it. The Giants feel good with what they have going into this season. I think some of the best moves the Giants made this season were the moves they didn’t make. I don’t mean Manny either. That would have been a great move. I think not signing Joe Crede was a good move. This means Pablo Sandoval would play 3rd base, and Travis Ishikawa would get his chance to play 1st base. Ishikawa has had a very nice start this spring training. He’s hitting .400 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI’s in 5 games.

Thoughts on Giants 10-7 spring win 2/25/09

Renteria got a double in his first AB (finishing 1-3), Sandoval followed him with a hit (1-3 with a walk) and then Travis Ishikawa got a 2 out RBI single. The Giants put up one run in the first inning. Lincecum gave up one hit to Peralta and got one strike out (Sizemore) in the bottom of the first inning facing 4 batters.

I know this is only spring training and these games don’t mean anything. It’s just nice to see the Giants able to put up some runs. After 6 innings and they already have 7 runs. The really good thing is they have 3 home runs so far. That’s from a team that hardly ever had multiple home runs in a game. Travis Ishikawa is projected to be the starting first baseman for the Giants unless Bowker can beat him out for the job. Ishikawa is off to a great start. He went 3-3 with two home runs and 4 RBI’s. Giants fan love to see someone in the lineup with some pop. The Giants will have more pop in the lineup this year by having Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa in the lineup for a full season.

The Giants now have 10 runs after 8 innings. Frandsen and Velez also got an RBI each. The very fast Velez has also stolen a base for the Giants. The Giants scored 3 runs off of Vinnie Chulk in 2 innings. Chulk was with the Giants last season.

Spring Training game one for the Giants is in the bag. The Giants beat the Indians 10-7. I really don’t care about wins during the spring. It’s just being able to see what players do what. For example a guy on the Giants Pichardo gave up 3 runs and I never heard of the guy. Although Yabu gave up 3 runs too and that’s kind of scary cause he’s in our bullpen. I only see him pitching in games to eat up innings in the middle. Not during close games. I will be watching MLB Network tonight to catch up on all the highlights from today. Just an FYI A-Rod did hit a home run today too.

Giants, Dodgers and Manny! Oh my!

I heard from A-Rods cousin that Manny will be signing with the Dodgers. Word on the street is that Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers are close to announcing they have reached an agreement. This is still at the rumor stage, because I haven’t heard any official announcement or anyone confirm it.

Everyone knows he will go back to the Dodgers. There is a lot of Giants fan that still have hope that Manny will sign with the Giants. I was listening to Larry Baer (Giants President) on the radio last night. He said that the Giants have still been talking to Manny’s agent Scott Boras. He said they haven’t made an offer cause Scott hasn’t asked them to. Plus they don’t want to make an offer, so he can just go right back to the Dodgers with it. Sounds like they are just going to wait around and hope Manny and the Dodgers just cut off contract talk.

The Giants are pretty low-key when they go after a player. Just like the Zito signing. No one knew the Giants were really in it to try to get him and then they signed him out of no where. A lot of Giants fans are hoping the same thing will happen with Manny.

The Dodgers have way more to lose if they don’t sign Manny. They have had Manny and know what he can do to get them in the playoffs. If they lose his bat then that means they will have lost him and pretty much they whole starting rotation. I can’t see the Dodgers at the top of the NL West without Manny. This is going to be the weakest division but can’t still go anyway. All the NL West teams have their weaknesses which means it’s still anyone’s division.

Strawberry is the next guy to bash players in a book

Just when you thought the books of bashing players was going to stop. It’s not…. Darryl Strawberry is going to be releasing a book in April. “Straw: Finding My Way” will detail the boozing, skirt-chasing New York Mets of the
DarrylStrawberry.jpgmid-1980’s.

“We were the boys of summer. The drunk, speed-freak, sneaking a smoke boys of summer,” Strawberry writes.” I have read that Strawberry will not be saying names of players but will tell it how it was during that time from his point of view.

I know I can’t wait to read this one. I have a few books that I want to read. This is another to add to my to do list. I always liked Strawberry. He just never was able to keep his nose clean. I remember when the Giants had him (1994). There was a sign behind him at the stadium saying “Strawberry Patch”. Awww the memories. =) Click here to read about the Strawberry book.

Rich Aurilia back with the Giants

Ken Rosenthal has reported that Rich Aurilia has decided to accept the Giants minor
RichAurilia.jpg179 league contract of the Phillies and Cubs. It’s reported that the deal should
be finalized today. Aurilia has played 10 of his 13 seasons with the Giants. He can play all infield spots. He would be a good fill in person at 1st and 3rd base. Welcome back Richie!

Aurilia was quoted as saying “I’m happy I’m a Giant and hopefully I can finish my career with the Giants,” Aurilia said. “I have a lot of pride in putting on that uniform.”

This weekends Hot Stove

A-Rod

Alex Rodriguez is the only name to be released from the ’03 steroid testing. He is on a list of
104 players to have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. A-Rod was approached by an SI reporter on Thursday. A-Rod did not want to discuss the test results. He would not say if he tested positive or not for performance enhancing drugs. A-Rod said “You’ll have to talk to the union.” He was asked if there was an expanation for his positive test, and he said “I’m not saying anything.” There were no penalties for positive tests in 2003. I’m sure we will get a lot more information on this in the next couple of days. I will try to keep you updated with information as  I get it.

Gordon signs a 1 year contract with the D-Backs

Tom Gordon has signed a 1 year contract with the Arizona. It’s reported that he will earn $500,000 and with bonuses can earn him up to $2.5 million. Gordon hasn’t pitched in a game since July 5th of last season with the Phillies.

Andruw Jones hopes to resurrect his career with the Rangers

SI.com has confirmed that Andruw Jones has signed a 1 year minor league contract with the Rangers. Jones was released by the Dodgers this offseason. He worked out a deal so the Dodgers will release him and still pay him his contract over time. The Rangers signed him for $500,000 plus $1 million in incentives. I really like Jones and hope he has a bounce back year. He’s to young to be on that big of a decline.

Ryan Howard signs a 3 year contract with the Phillies

Thumbnail image for RyanHoward.jpgWell now the Phillies and Ryan Howard can stop all the arbitration stuff. I think this is a great move for the Phillies. They have a legit power hitter locked up with a contract he’s going to be happy with. If he can cut down a lot of his strike out’s, he’s going to be an even better player. He will earn $15 million this season, $19 million next year and $20 million in 2011.

Giants have an offer on the table for Crede and Aurilia

It’s been reported that CBS television on Saturday that the Giants have made an offer to Joe Crede. No specifics on the contract offer have been reported. Crede isn’t that big bat that the Giants need but he’s a good 3rd baseman and has a little pop. It’s just a question if he can stay healthy or not. Maybe that’s what the Giants signed Juan Uribe to back him up like he did last year for the White Sox. The only other team that has been talking about trying to sign Crede has been the Twins.

The Giants have also made an offer to Rich Aurilia for a minor league contract. Aurilia has spent 10 of his 13 big league seasons with the Giants. Brian Sabea said “I think he’s taking the weekend to decide. We hope he comes back.”

I did go to the Giants Fan Fest this weekend and will be blogging about it this week. I also will have pictures of the event in the Fan Fest blog.

Manny is it going to be Giants or Dodgers?

A local writer in the Bay Area has said that he thinks the Dodgers have made their final offer to Manny Ramirez. We all know that the Dodgers have made 3 offers but none of them seem to be anywhere near what Ramirez wants. I still think there is no way Manny will end up with anyone else other than the Dodgers, but a lot of Giants fan feel they can snag him now if they really want him. It’s hard to believe that Manny is still a free agent and were a little over a week away from the start of spring training.

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Manny.jpgOnly time will tell how this Manny drama will end. Will he hold out past the start of the season and wait to get signed in May? I wish I knew the answer. I’m sure everyone wishes he would just pick a team and sign already. This Manny story has been getting old, but he’s such a big player to still be without a team. Manny could end up really screwing himself if he holds out to long. Teams that have the money for Manny might get tired of waiting and sign other players like Adam Dunn or Bobby Abreu.

Barry Zito has been trying to get updates from Scott Boras about Manny Ramirez but he said Boras is being to professional. He won’t give Zito any insight either. It’s just a waiting game for everyone. The Dodgers have much more to lose by not signing Manny. They had the Dodgers and the Giants never had him.

Are you guys tired of the Manny rumors or do you love this because it’s part of baseball?

What’s the Giants next move?

I keep reading and hearing about the Giants and possibilities. Seems like the
JoeCrede.jpgGiants are rumored with any and every free agent. The Giants needed so much so pretty much any player addition was a good fit for the Giants. Early on in the “Hot Stove” the Giants were linked to have interest in Rafael Furcal who would have been a great addition at shortstop. They ended up with Edgar Renteria. I don’t think that’s a bad move. Saves some money and Edgar is still an upgrade at shortstop. I think the move is fine if the Giants get another good player. If no other moves are made. Then I don’t see a point. Just let the young guys play. I just think this NL West division is so weak this year. That it’s there for the Giants to just take it. The starting rotation is really solid and the bullpen has been improved with the addition of Jeremy Affeldt and Bob Howry.

Giants fan have also heard the Giants name with free agents such as Orlando Hudson, Adam Dunn, Pat Burrell, Manny Ramirez, Ty Wigginton, Joe Crede, C.C. Sabathia and now Bobby Abreu. I’m sure I left a few other names out.

We all know where CC ended up at. He’s went with the money and signed with the Yankees. You can’t blame a guy for wanting to get paid. Giants fans just hoped CC we take a hometown discount to play for the Giants. It was like a fantasy for Giants fans. It just wouldn’t have made much sense to pay him a huge salary and not get a bat with that money. Well we didn’t get him but where’s the big bat?

MannyRamirezredsox.jpgWe no longer would need Orlando Hudson if we have 3 players who are trying to fight for our 2nd base position. To me it was either Hudson or a shortstop and we already got the shortstop. Pat Burrell who is from the Bay Area didn’t seem like a good fit to me either. He’s just not the big bat I think the Giants should add. It’s known they want a first or third baseman. Ty Wigginton and Joe Crede seem like they would be okay, but they are not the big bat that the Giants need. Adam Dunn sounds okay to me even though he’s not great on “D” and strikes out a lot. I’m just trying to get any bat in a Giants uniform. I would have never said I want Dunn before today. I did also see the Giants were interested in Bobby Abreu and a cheaper alternative to Manny Ramirez. I just can’t see the Giants bringing him. He’s a good player but he’s on the decline with his power numbers.

If anyone from the Giants front office ever reads this blog. Please let us Giants fans know if you want to win or just put an okay team out there to get your $$$ rolling in. Giants fans have been waiting a long time to win it all. I’m not saying this is the team to do it, but if we had a bat like Manny’s then we would have a great shot at winning the NL West. Then once you get in the playoffs it’s a crap shoot. Well I like our chances in a crap shoot with the starting rotation we would take into a playoff series.
